Locksmith Arlington VA | Residential, Commercial & Automotive Locksmith

Arlington runs on apartment towers, garden-block courtyards and Metro-corridor offices. Navy Locksmith works the locks those buildings actually use: fob entries, mailroom cylinders, storefront hardware and car keys cut on site.

Who can authorize a lock change in your building

If it is your own unit door, you can. Bring photo ID and something tying you to the address. A lease, a utility bill or mail will do. If it is a lobby, corridor, mailbox bank or garage door, the building controls it, and management has to authorize the work rather than a resident.

Worth settling on the phone, because it decides whether the visit can go ahead at all. Door by door:

  • Your own unit door. You authorize it, with ID and proof you live there or hold the lease.
  • Corridor, lobby and stairwell doors. Building management, not residents.
  • Mailbox banks. Often the building's, sometimes USPS-controlled. Check with management first.
  • Garage and gate hardware. Nearly always building-controlled.
  • Leased offices. The tenant can usually authorize their own suite; base-building doors go through the property manager.

This comes up more in Arlington than almost anywhere nearby. Between Rosslyn, Courthouse, Clarendon, Virginia Square and Ballston, and again through Pentagon City and Crystal City, a large share of front doors sit behind a lobby, a fob reader or a parking deck gate. Many condo and rental boards also set which cylinder formats may be fitted so master keying stays intact. If your building has a hardware standard, say so on the call and we will work to it.

What we handle in Arlington

Six calls we get most often

Every one of these is quoted after we know the hardware, the building type and who is authorizing the work.

01

Apartment & condo lockouts

Unit doors, and the storage or mailroom locks that sit alongside them. Building-controlled doors need management sign-off, which we confirm before dispatch rather than after arrival.

02

Rekeying after a move

New tenancy, new owners, or a key that went missing. Where the cylinder is sound, rekeying costs less than replacement. Our residential locksmith service covers the same work across the region.

03

Lock repair & alignment

A deadbolt that needs shouldering into place is usually a door or frame problem, not a lock problem. Diagnosing that first avoids paying for hardware that was never faulty.

04

Office & retail hardware

Suite doors, storefront cylinders, closers and exit devices along Wilson Boulevard and Columbia Pike. Larger sites are usually better served by our master key systems work.

05

Smart locks & keypads

Keypad and smart deadbolt fitting on doors that can take them. Not every rental door can, so we check the prep, backset and door thickness before recommending a unit.

06

Car keys & fobs

Keys cut and programmed where the vehicle sits, including apartment parking decks. See car key replacement across Northern Virginia for what each key type needs.

Locked out right now

Most lockouts open without damage

Most locks can be opened non-destructively (picked, bypassed or manipulated) and left working afterwards. Drilling is a last resort, not a default, because it means paying for a replacement cylinder on top of the visit.

In Arlington there is often a door before the door. If you are stuck outside a lobby you cannot badge into, say so on the call. A technician may need building management to open the common areas before anyone can reach your unit at all.

Sometimes drilling is the only option: a high-security cylinder with anti-drill protection, a bolt already snapped inside the housing, some smart lock failures. When that happens we say so before starting, and explain what replacing the hardware will involve.

We do not publish a flat lockout price, because the figure depends on the lock type, whether it opens without damage, the time of day and whether anything needs replacing. Describing the door and what happened gets you a realistic number on the phone instead of a surprise at the door.

  • Photo ID. Asked for on every job, without exception.
  • Proof of the address. A lease, a utility bill or mail in your name at that address.
  • For a vehicle. Title, registration or insurance in your name.
  • For a common-area door. The property manager’s contact, since a resident cannot authorize it.
  • Our hours. Sunday to Friday, 8:00 am to 11:00 pm. Saturday, 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm. Outside those we are not dispatching, so it is worth knowing before you wait.

If the bolt only throws when you lift the door, the lock is fine

That is a frame problem, not a lock problem, and replacing the lock will not fix it. The new one meets the same misaligned strike and starts failing the same way within a season or two.

It is the most common call we get from the older single-family streets of North Arlington, along Langston Boulevard and the residential roads north of it. Wood doors swell with humidity, hinges drop a fraction each year, and a strike plate that lined up perfectly a decade ago now sits slightly proud. People compensate without noticing: a lift on the handle, a shoulder against the door, a harder turn of the key. That side-loading is what actually wears the cylinder out.

Check these before buying hardware:

  • The bolt only throws fully if you lift or push the door
  • The key catches at one particular point in the turn
  • A visible scrape mark on or beside the strike plate
  • A smart lock that whirs longer than it used to, or reports a jam

Which is the short version of why the same call in Ballston and in North Arlington are two different jobs. One is usually about access and authorization; the other is usually about a door that has moved.

Business & retail

Commercial work along the corridors

Arlington's business hardware sits in two broad groups. Ground-floor retail and restaurants along Columbia Pike, Wilson Boulevard, Shirlington and the Rosslyn and Ballston street level run aluminum storefront doors with mortise cylinders, closers and exit devices that take heavy daily use. Office suites in the tower corridors are usually lever sets and cylindrical locks inside a base-building access system that we do not touch without the property manager.

For storefronts, the most common call is not a failed lock at all. It is a closer that has lost adjustment or a strike that has drifted, so the latch no longer catches cleanly and staff start relying on the deadbolt. Fixing the alignment restores the door; replacing the cylinder does not.

Where a business needs staff access separated from manager access, that is a keying plan rather than a hardware purchase, and it is worth setting up properly the first time. Our commercial locksmith service covers the same scope, and where an exit device is binding or failing to latch, panic bar repair is the more specific starting point.

Drivers

Car keys in a county of parking decks

Most Arlington vehicle calls come from one of three places: an apartment or office parking deck, a residential street in the north of the county, or a surface lot near the retail corridors. Underground decks are worth mentioning when you call, because phone signal is often poor and it helps to agree a level and a meeting point in advance.

What a replacement key needs depends on what the vehicle uses. A basic mechanical key can be cut to code or from the lock. A transponder key has to be cut and then programmed to the car. Proximity and push-to-start systems need the fob paired to the vehicle, and some manufacturers require all existing keys present so old ones can be invalidated.

Either way you will need photo ID and proof the vehicle is yours: title, registration or insurance in your name at that address. We ask for it every time, without exception. If the key snapped rather than went missing, broken key extraction usually comes first, and full detail sits on our automotive locksmith page.

Before you call

Four things that speed up an Arlington job

None of this is a requirement to get help. It just shortens the call and makes the quote firmer before anyone is dispatched.

  • The building type. High-rise, garden apartment, townhouse or detached house. Each changes access and authorization.
  • Whose door it is. Your unit, a common area, or a leased suite. This decides who has to sign off.
  • A photo of the lock or key. The face of the cylinder, or the key including its head, identifies most hardware.
  • What actually happened. Key lost, key snapped, lock seized, door no longer latching. Each points at a different fix.
Questions

Arlington locksmith FAQs

Yes. Arlington is a single county with no incorporated towns inside it, so the whole county is one service area for us, from Rosslyn and Courthouse through Clarendon, Virginia Square and Ballston, down to Pentagon City, Crystal City and Shirlington, and across North Arlington.

For your own unit door, yes, once you can show photo ID and something that ties you to the address, such as a lease, a utility bill or mail. Lobby, corridor and garage doors are controlled by the building, so those need authorization from management rather than from a resident.

Rekeying is usually the better option when the existing hardware is in good condition and suits the door. It changes which key operates the cylinder without replacing the lock, so it costs less. Replacement makes sense when the hardware is worn, damaged, non-standard or you want a different grade of lock. Many Arlington buildings also set a hardware standard, which can decide it for you.

Usually yes, since the work is done at the vehicle. Mention the garage when you call, because phone signal is often poor below ground, so it helps to agree a level and meeting point first. You will need photo ID and proof the vehicle is yours.

Often not. When a bolt only throws under pressure, the usual cause is the door or frame having shifted so the bolt no longer lines up with the strike. That is common in Arlington's older North Arlington houses. Adjusting the strike or easing the door normally fixes it, and replacing the lock would not have solved anything.

No. Navy Locksmith is a mobile locksmith based at 2800 Juniper St #2, Fairfax, VA 22031, and Arlington is part of the area we serve. All work is carried out at your property or vehicle rather than at a shop counter.

No. Posted hours are Sunday to Friday, 8:00 am to 11:00 pm, and Saturday from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm, so Saturday daytime falls outside them. It is worth knowing before you wait on a call back rather than finding out an hour later.
